This is where I shall be posting stories, images and analysis on Whatever, while I prepare to leave England for a 3 month stint in the Kingdom of Bicycles! Stay tuned for epic tales of bitter Beijing eats, monumental mosquito bites and recollections of astounding examples of Chinglish!

Bread Talk is now my new favourite bakery after coming up with this gem of a pastry “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bacon”.  Amazing.

Eyelid Stickers

My local Watsons stocks many varieties of eyelid stickers.  That’s right. Eyelid Stickers.  Their use you ask? To turn your “single” eyelids into beautiful “double” eyelids ofcourse! Ok so since I already have “double” eyelids I refrained from purchasing any (I don’t exactly want triple eyelids now do I..or do I?) but if any of … Read more

Beijing Capital Museum

Last weekend I went to the Capital Museum with my cous to check out some Beijing related exhibitions.  I especially enjoyed the exhibit about “old” Beijing, elaborating on life in the hutongs and customs but it wasn’t without it’s fair share of freaky wax figures.  The image of the various traditional haircuts for boys is … Read more

Subway Pt 2

Subway provided some signage gold today!  Today being Thursday, the sub-of-the-day was the good ol’ SAUSAGE SUB.  (what is this?) For further reason to doubt the legality of this sausage sub, one has to cast a keen eye on the “photo” of the sub in question.  Studied carefully, one can see that someone with rather … Read more

Subway Pt 1

Subway has become somewhat of a daily haunt recently, however today I was particularly pleased to be greeted with this sign on the door. It reads: “This door has been bad.  Please use side door”.  Naughty door! Time for you to stand on the naughty step with all the other bad doors.

High School Musical: China World Premiere

So I was walking through Sanlitun village on my way to the bus stop after work as per usual, when I saw a massive crowd gathered in the central courtyard around the entrance of a hall decked out to look like a gym, and blasting out high school musical songs…basically: W.T.F?!?! Naturally I just waltzed … Read more

Bi Shu Shan Zhuang

On the last weekend of July (my how time flies!) I went with my cous to Bi Shu Shan Zhuang (a.k.a. Imperial Summer Villa) in Cheng De, which is about 3 hours drive from Beijing.  As expected from a UNESCO heritage site it was beautiful! Saw lots of monasteries and also the quarters for the emperors of … Read more

Pejoy Cheese

I bought some Pejoy biscuit sticks filled with cheese cake flavoured cream.  It’s lush.  I especially enjoyed the little poem on the front of the packaging to let me know what I’m in for: “Soft and smooth, like bathing in the sun on the Aegean Sea, is the taste from the Greek cheese myth” Holy … Read more

The Western Supermarket: “Market Place”

Having divulged in the horror stories surrounding the local convenience store, I now shop at, what I call, “the western supermarket” at Sanlitun village, next to the diplomatic compound where I work.  It’s like an even posher more expensive version of Waitrose, basically.  One enters to gleaming shelves of flawless fruit and vegetables all paired … Read more
